Lawns

Why a lawn looks stressed

Brown turf has more than one cause. The month, the spot in the yard, and whether the grass pulls up will narrow it before anyone talks about a product.

Cool-season lawns in southeast Michigan are usually a mix of Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fescue. They grow strongly in spring and fall and lose density in July, when heat exposes thin soil, heavy shade, mowing stress, and insects feeding on the roots.

Read the spot, not the whole yard

A stripe along the driveway is often salt or snow pile, not a fungus. A circle that appears as the snow melts may be snow mold. A path of worn turf to the side door is traffic. Turf that is thin only under the maples is responding to shade and root competition. Fertilizer will not invent sunlight.

Weeds tell a related story. Crabgrass germinates in thin, warm soil, which is why it shows up in the same bare spots every June. Creeping Charlie and moss like shade and moisture. Clover and dandelion are ordinary broadleaf weeds in open turf. Nutsedge often marks a spot that stays wet. Naming the weed is more useful than saying the lawn is weedy.

Grubs and lookalikes

If the brown turf rolls back like carpet and you find C-shaped white grubs, insects are feeding on the roots. Japanese beetle is the species people recognize, because the adults feed on lindens, roses, and grapes. European chafer is the other grub Michigan State University discusses for home lawns. MSU notes that chafer grubs feed later into the fall and resume earlier in spring, that adults fly on warm evenings from about the middle of June into early July, and that the insect is a problem on non-irrigated turf. Animals digging in the lawn are often hunting those grubs. Irrigated, dense turf is a different situation, and a dry August can brown a lawn with no grubs at all. MSU European chafer bulletin.

Dollar spot and brown patch are diseases of the leaves and crowns in warm, humid weather, especially where the grass stays wet. They do not lift the sod the way grubs do. That difference is worth checking before anyone decides what the brown patch is.

Product rates belong on the label, after the lawn has been seen. Mowing stays with you or your lawn service. The service page is lawn fertilization and weed control. To ask for a look, request an assessment with the property address and which part of the yard changed.
